October Volunteer Spotlight
Helping kids reach their potential is no easy task, but it’s one that volunteer of the month Julie Huffman chooses to face head on. Julie has been volunteering at Arbor Christian Academy for over ten years. She has served in various roles, but as she substituted in classrooms she noticed kids who struggled in reading. She found her passion, and has been helping kids strengthen their reading skills ever since. “Just knowing I can help these kids reach their reading potential and unlock their future is motivation,” Julie said.
She now helps in the library with the “My Reading Coach” software. In the program Julie guides the students through a self-paced computer and hands-on curriculum, in an effort to raise reader ability level. This program has been used for the past four years; it focuses on reading skills and comprehension. Prior to this current program, she would sit with students and let them read to her, and then coach them to better skills.
Julie first started volunteering to be a part of her children’s education. Now, she is not only motivated by her own kids but also by seeing kids read at or above their grade level. “You never know what a child’s gifts and callings are, so it’s important that nothing stands in their way,” Julie said. While substituting, she noticed some of the children who acted out in the class and caused distractions to others were the ones who were struggling in their reading. She realized they were acting out because of frustration, so she started helping them improve.
Julie calls others to come along and be a part of making a difference to others with this one charge: “You have an obligation to use the gifts God has given you, to help others in the same way; and in Arbor there is a place for every gifting,” she said. To her, it’s that easy; we’re all called and it’s simple. Whatever we are gifted in or whatever our hearts long to do, “just do it – make a difference; help others,” Julie said.
If you want to be a part of Arbor, just as Julie Huffman has, call the school offices at 355-7207 and get involved. It’s the dedication of volunteers that truly does make a difference. Congratulations, Julie, on being named Volunteer of the Month. Your service is much appreciated.
