Recently we hosted our annual Men’s Breakfast with over five hundred men in attendance. Dan Sanders, CEO of united Super Markets, brought a great biblical message on the importance of employee involvement and rewards that brings to a company.
Events like the Men’s Breakfast and Men’s Retreat exist to help men find a place of connection in the church and find the light of Christ. In Matthew 5, Jesus instructs us to be salt and light to the earth. I have always found it interesting that Jesus called us to be two very different things such as salt and light. Salt provides flavor and seasoning. It enhances the taste of food. Light on the other hand provides direction and visibility. It orients you where you are. It disperses the darkness and draws to itself.
When I began to study the meaning of this passage, the Lord revealed something very interesting to me. In the salt valleys of Judea, they have found that the salt exposed to the elements of the sun, wind and rain will loose its flavor. But, the salt that remains tucked up against the rock, out of the earth’s elements, will maintain its salty flavor and savor. It is important that we, as Christians, remain tucked up against the rock. In other words, we need to be connected in the local church in order that we maintain the flavor of Christ. When we drift away from the rock and allow ourselves to be exposed to the elements, then we will loose our flavor. If we are able to maintain this quality, we have the ability to be a brighter beacon of light to a hurting and lost world. By being the light of Christ, we have the opportunity to use our influence to reach a lost and hurting world. Men will be drawn to us. And as they are drawn to us, we can help orient them in their relationship with Christ, giving direction on how to disperse the darkness in their own lives.
I hope you will take the opportunity to get tucked up against the rock and maintain your flavor. Get connected! While at the same time, accept the challenge to take your influential light to a hurting and lost world.
